Universal Translator: Google Translate Has 51 Offline Language Packs
Google Translate now provides offline service for 51 different languages. This means that you can turn your smartphone into a "Universal Translator" that works even when you don't have cell connectivity.
Users can listen to translations spoken aloud; Google Translate accepts a variety of possible inputs, including via voice, handwriting, or camera.
Translations between the following languages are supported:
Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Basque, Belarusian, Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Esperanto, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, French, Galician, Georgian, German, Greek, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Lao, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malay, Maltese, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Vietnamese, Welsh and Yiddish.
Star Trek fans are looking for cylindrical smartphones, because then they could pretend to have a for-real Universal Translator:

(Star Trek Universal Translator)
Science fiction writers have expressed their love for this idea over the years; fans recall fondly the babelfish (do you remember which book?) and of course Hugo Gernsback's language rectifier.
Via Android Police; thanks to the always-alert Winchell Chung of Project Rho for pointing this one out.
