Comments on SkyV SkyCeiling From The Sky Factory
Now that we have amazing sky ceilings, it's time to get to work on those vast underground cities I've been reading about. (Read
the complete story)
"It's a sad reflection on society that people feel the need to mimic artificially and at massive expense what's already completely available outdoors entirely naturally and for free."
(Fortigurn 11/4/2008 11:21:04 PM) |
"seems like something they would need in a space station /ship environment. i think a reference to artificial environments in space is Aliens and Star Trek"
(gid 11/5/2008 5:37:15 AM) |
"In response to Fortigurn, not all of us can have a skylight in our bedrooms. I for one live in a basement. I've also lived in apartments with other units above me. Can you imagine how cool this would be in that situation? Lighten up."
(ZombieSlapper 11/7/2008 9:46:44 PM) |
"This is a very common reference in SF, I know these are much later references, but still a good ones. In Orson Scott Card's Worthing Saga, Abner Doon takes Mother to a room with a huge artificial sky because on Capital there is no wilderness left. Vernon Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep, this concept is used in a few places, but probably best in the artificial lake room."
(meditating bear 11/11/2008 9:36:25 AM) |
"meditating bear - very good, I need to look those up. I also recall the lunar disneylands from The Phantom of Kansas, a 1976 novel by John Varley. In it, artificial caves carved in rock that are used to present 'environmental happenings' full-on stormy weather presentations.
I'd also recommend looking at the entry for central city dome, from Earthlight, a 1955 novel by Arthur C. Clarke."
(Bill Christensen 11/11/2008 10:52:20 AM) |
"One step closer to video walls like in "Total Recall". All the company has to do next is make their SkyCeilings 3-D and able to tune into broadcasts."
