Transparent OLED Display Gets Bigger
Transparent OLED displays from Samsung are getting bigger fast. In February, their prototype transparent OLED display was just 4.3 inches measured on the diagonal. Now, it's already fifteen inches.

Both of the displays use organic EL materials. The part where normal OLED displays would show black color is transparent, and the background can be seen though the displays.
Normally, OLED displays are designed so that organic EL light exits either from the side of positive electrode or from the side of negative electrode. The new displays use transparent materials for both the positive and negative electrodes, and organic EL light exits from the both sides. In addition, the displays are sealed with a transparent material.
LG Display demonstrated a 15-inch transparent OLED display, which is aimed at use in public places. The transmittance of the display, which is the first sample, is 30%. The company has not yet decided when to commercialize it.
Why not commercialize it? If H.G. Wells thought it was a cool idea, I'm betting America will, too. As you see in the screen capture below from Wells' prophetic 1936 film Things to Come, the technologically advanced society of the future makes use of widescreen transparent flat panel technology (see more pictures).
