Comments on RFID 'Powder' - World's Smallest RFID Tag
New tag from Hitachi is incredibly small - truly RFID in powder form. (Read
the complete story)
"Let's remove fiction, for once, in re all the phony questions as to whether RFID technology will compromise personal privacy... and begin revealing ways for private citizens to detect and destroy the chips. THAT will be doing something. Or, better still... let's remove the scoundrels who've endorsed broadscale use of RFID in areas where it doesn't belong."

"Here I am joking about edible RFID tags, and it turns out that someone has recently patented them. Kodak has come up with digestible tags that are
"... harmless and intentionally fragile. The tags would be covered with soft gelatin that takes a while to dissolve in the stomach. After swallowing a tag a patient need only sit next to a radio source and receiver.
They stop working when exposed to gastric acid for a specific period of time, providing a subtle way to monitor a patient's digestive tract.
Kodak says that similar radio tags could also be embedded in an artificial knee or hip joint in such a way that they disintegrate as the joint does, warning of the need for more surgery"
See more at NewScientist via MedGadget."

"The development of these tiny chips should naturally lead to a discussion of when portable RFID scanners will become available to allow consumers to detect/locate such chips in things they purchase, receive as gifts, and eventually dispose of into the trash/recycling stream."

"That's an interesting point. One of the key elements of any data privacy act (including the HIPPA medical record standard) is that the owner of the record should have full control over it, and should be notified of its use, and have every opportunity to correct it. The only efforts to bring RFID 'to the masses' is in the form of 'do-it-yourself' articles on building RFID readers. Maybe someday, everyone will have one."

"RFID 'Powder' - World's Smallest RFID Tag Its a slippery slope from here to a full-blown police state. The media machine is already trying to sell us this technology as a means of protecting ourselves from would-be terrorists by allowing the government to better identify US citizens and to protect your children from being kidnapped. This is a complete load and is just one more step towards the police state. The government would love to be able to track not only us but our currency transactions. Just think if Stalin or Hilter had access to this kind of technology. We are becoming what our country has always fought againest. It starts with the National ID card next May and then its tracking chips in our money, our purchases and our own bodies. It is this coming tide that has caused me to flee the US for a safer country. "RFID 'Powder' - World's Smallest RFID Tag Whats the distance on reading the tag? That isn't mentioned in the article. Its a bit misleading to list terrible uses for these devices if they can't even realistically be used in those ways. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance, but we need common sense too."

"Good point. I've added the material about the read distance, which can vary greatly with both active and passive rfid chips."

"Here's a quote from Philip K. Dick's Vulcan's Hammer (1956 - novella, 1960 - novel):
'Madness, he thought. The ultimate horror for our paranoid culture; vicious unseen mechanical entities that flit at the edges of our vision, that can go anywhere, that are in our very midst. And there may be an unlimited number of them.'"

"It is mathematically impossible for one entity to be "60 times smaller" than another entity. If an entity were just "1 times smaller" than another, it would vanish."

"You can never believe quoted "read distances" because with todays extremely high output digital amplifiers which can easily ignore all background "noise", the read distance of any electronic transmitter can be increased from 25 feet to 25 miles! The electronic signal, once transmitted is out there travelling forever. Though some of the energy from the signal is absorbed by natural and manmade objects, the signal is still out there. Picking up that signal is just a matter of how sensitive your equipment is. Today, that sensitivity can be infinitely high."

"No, It is not mathematically impossible for one entity to be "60 times smaller" than another entity. If you have a ball that's 6ft in diamter and another is 360, then one is 60 times smalller than the other."

"Let's look at something positive...Sprinkle them on imprisoned terrorists and then let them go. Follow them and whenever there are a bunch in one place, well round em up. If they were just drinking tea, well let them go. If they were making bombs it was worth the loss of a few freedoms."

"A chip of this size is probably too small to have any sort of flash memory capacity, but I'm not sure. What's the smallest size an EPROM (erasable programmable read-only memory) can be?"

"A correction to [Electronicss Tech]'s post:
An EMF signal, once emitted, DOES NOT PROPAGATE FOREVER. There exists an inverse power relationship: Doubling your distance from a transmitter means that the power density of the radiated wave at your new location is reduced to one-quarter of its previous value. And this is in a perfect vacuum, an atmosphere decreases the power even further.
All of the extremely small RFID tags, including the "dust" featured, are passive UHF and transmit their ID by reflecting the tag reader's radio wave back to it with some encoded information. This reflection wave intensity decreases via the inverse fourth power law, basically meaning that the tag can't transmit information nearly as far as the reader, and just because the tag can receive the reader's wave, doesn't guarantee that the reader can receive the tag's.
Beyond this, the smaller tags are also limited by their need for an antenna. There are limits to how small the antenna can be based on the wavelength of the radio frequency used. Even the dust mentioned above has to use an antenna magnitudes of size longer than the tag itself is just to be usable with current UHF reader technology.
This technology, like any other, has potential for good and bad uses, but there are limits as with anything else. Educate yourself regarding those limits, and you'll be able to make more informed decisions regarding where to focus your energy and resources towards ensuring that your interests are best accounted for."

please if you want to save yourself..
read up on them,
realise how your government is corrupting you!!
realise what is really going on in this world!!
i would strongly recomend every sinlge person in the world to watch zeitheist, its a documentary of whats REALLY going on behind the scenes!!

these people have no idea what is going on. there are no terrorists, its the government! what is wrong with you people. they can make you believe anything they want you too through the news and television. the president of the united states is one of the worlds biggest terrorists. he fuels the war!! we dont need these chips!! the only reason there is a war is because you americans are dumb enough to believe in a thing called terrorism. terrorism is what you are doing to the world. there was no bombings, it was all a hoax!!its all just to get the oil and send the world prices sky high to pay interest rates. havnt you noticed them going up? these rfid chips are a way of getting the whold world under one world controll and that will be the end of life as we know it. if we depend on these chips as a way of life, we will have no choice in anything anymore. we dont anyways!! its too late

"Meh... Go ahead and chip us all I say... Im a third world citizen so i already have no rights. Hahahaha!!
And I'd like to see these chips in use in soldiers. If they could track them and their actions i think it could be useful to reduce war atrocities at the very least."
(Unworried 12/1/2010 6:22:06 PM) |
"The idea of using some sort of defined technology to track soldiers to make sure that troops demonstrating poor judgement or conduct can be held accountable for their actions is interesting. I'm wondering if many soldiers don't already carry cell phones or other devices that are trackable. And of course, soldiers themselves would be rightly concerned if their tracking devices could be used against them by the enemy."
