Unfurl The Future! Huawei Mate X versus Galaxy Fold

One of science fiction writer William Gibson's most evocative images from his 1986 novel Count Zero was the unfurling polycarbon phone screen:

"We'll key that to the image on this phone." He took an elegant modular unit from the bag and placed it in front of her. A paper thin polycarbon screen unfurled silently from the top of the unit and immediately grew rigid. She had once watched a butterfly emerge into the world, and seen the transformation of its drying wings...

We're not quite there yet, but still. Better take a look at Huawei's Mate X foldable phone - and the Galaxy Fold foldable phone.

Galaxy Fold

The roughly 200-gram Galaxy Fold flips open in portrait orientation, and the inside is coated with a film that gives it a photopaper-like appearance. It’s got a protective polymer consisting of a cover window, a shock-absorbent film, and a polarizer that’s 45 percent slimmer than the company’s previous thinnest, along with a flexible layer and backplane. Samsung says the tech — dubbed Infinity Flex Display — took seven years to develop...

It’s available in both an LTE and 5G version, starting at an eye-popping $1,980. April 26 is the launch date.

Huawei Mate X

In the unfolded position, the Huawei Mate X has an 8-inch tablet OLED display and is 5.4mm thick, just slightly thinner than the latest iPad Pro. The folding mechanism is something the company calls the Falcon Wing Hinge design. In the photo above, it’s the series of bumps that runs along the side of the device.

Inside, the phone is powered by Huawei’s processors, the Balong 5000 and Kirin 980. The company claims this will offer speeds 10 times as fast as 4G phones and more than 2 times the official industry standard for 5G. Practically, that means you can download a 1GB movie in 3 seconds, according to Huawei.
