Philips 100-Inch TV Parlor
LG Philips LCD unveiled their 100-inch thin film transistor liquid crystal display (LCD) panel today at the firm's plant in Paju, Kyonggi Province, Korea.

According to the company, their new display is the world's largest LCD, about 1.5 times bigger than the previous record holder, Samsung Electronics. Philips' seventh-generation production lines at Paju produced the display, which offers 6.22 million pixels in a 16:9 widescreen format. Remarkably, the response time (time for a pixel to go from black to white) is faster than 5 milliseconds; double digit speeds are more typical. This means that the display is less likely to have blurred fast-moving images. A 3000:1 contrast ratio and 180-degree viewing angle make the display even more attractive.
Philips' new display brings the TV parlor of Ray Bradbury's 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451 closer to reality. In the novel, television screens the size of entire walls enfold the user, threatening the process of personal individuation:
But who has ever torn himself from the claw that encloses you when you drop a seed in a TV parlor? It grows you any shape it wishes! It is an environment as real as the world. It becomes and is the truth. Books can be beaten down with reason. But with all my knowledge and scepticism, I have never been able to argue with a one-hundred-piece symphony orchestra, full colour, three dimensions, and I being in and part of those incredible parlors.

Plasma screen enthusiasts have already gotten theirs; Panasonic introduced a 103-inch plasma display panel at CES in January.
Readers who enjoy unique and eccentric displays should read about the Multi-Touch Interaction Overlord Control Screen; if you are looking for real, open-air plasma displays, see True 3D Plasma Display. Read more about the 100-inch display at
