Sir Fred Hoyle (1915-2001) was a British astronomer and sf writer. He worked most of his life at the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge, and was director for many years. He was denied a share in the 1983 Nobel Prize for physics, despite his pioneering the concept of stellar nucleosynthesis (the idea that heavy elements are created in stars).
