"Brit and US dirigibles were lost due to ignoring German experience and advice, lack of weather data and radar, mismanagement, foolish mis-modification, and US Navy hostility (at the time) to aviation of any kind.
I agree with defro1378 that dirigibles could make a comeback, and several attempts have already been made, but it may take a contract for a military airship to absorb the intial development costs before we would see commercial freighters and such. Here's hoping!
