Asher, talking about his book Runcible Tales, says "The inspiration for the Runcible has only fictional sources and is not exactly a new idea: you have Larry Niven's teleportation booths, C.J. Cherryh's Gates in those wonderful Morgaine novels, and much else beside." The word itself was coined in the late nineteenth century by Edward Lear - a nonsense word."
