Electric Rifle
A device that shoots an electrical charge. (Read

""Tom Swift and His Electric Rifle" was inspiration for John Cover in the 1960s to create the Taser.
A useless bit of knowledge but interesting. "

"I just read the bit on TomSwift and his Electric Rifle, and he mentions "luminous bars of light"... sounds like a laser to me."

"I have read in a news article (http://www.inthesetimes.com/site/main/article/2894/) that Jack Cover, the man who reportedly invented the first stun gun in 1974, named the his invention as an acronym for "Thomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle""

"Couldn't this be an example of Science fiction immitating theoretical science? Didn't tesla have a "death ray" that worked under similar principles? Isn't this the wikipedia article related to the subject?

"Yikes - see this article on the teleforce, a charged particle beam weapon developed by Tesla and offered to the US military. Tesla envisioned it as an entirely defensive weapon. Here's a quick quote: "“But while it will make every nation safe against any attack by a would-be invader, Dr. Tesla added, the death-beam by its nature could not be employed similarly as a weapon for offense. For this death-beam, he explained, could be generated only from large, stationary and immovable power plants, stationed in the manner of old-time forts at various strategic distances from each country's border. They could not be moved for the purposes of attack."
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teleforce."
(Bill Christensen 6/27/2007 2:23:46 PM ) |
"So Tesla anticipated the strategic defense beam weapon! But, given that the OTHER thing he anticipated was beamed POWER, I think he was kidding himself about the "no offensive applications" part."

"I think a taser stun gun death beam system, is like an electricians smart bullet device for the future."
