"About scientific ethics - in my experience, the cold-hearted, impersonal approach is just a defense mechanism. For instance, my college anatomy class was hard for me because we had to disect cats. The guy at the next table kept making 'meow' sounds, and I finally told him, "Don't do that! I love cats and the only way I can get through this is to forget that these were once living, breathing creatures, and think of them as inanimate objects!" He stopped making the sounds. Looking back, I wonder if it was some sort of defense mechanism for him. "
