Comments on New Earth Detected Around Gliese 581
Remarkable find by astronomers demonstrates that extrasolar Earth-like planets are not just fiction. (Read
the complete story)
| "WOULD THE EXTRA MASS POSSIBLY BE RADIOACTIVE TO KEEP THE SURFACE TEMP SO WARM SINCE IT IS SO FAR FROM ITS SUN?" (HEINLEIN, A.L. 4/26/2007 2:48:38 PM) |
| "Maybe, but I believe they calculated the mean temperature range by calculating it's orbit and distance from Gliese 581, then comparing that with the star's known luminosity and spectral type.
I'd suspect a planet in such close orbit, around such an old star would probably be tide-locked (like our moon) and present one face permanently towards Gliese 581.
It's larger mass also would make me wager it's got a thick Venus-like atmosphere.
However, this is still exciting because it proves "Earth-like" small rocky planets are common in the galaxy.
" ( 4/26/2007 5:16:15 PM) |
| "The question about its atmosphere got to me too. If the planet's atmosphere was anything like Mars or Venus, life couldn't possibly exist on it." (bill 4/30/2007 1:34:59 PM) |
| "... because of the heat trapping qualities of CO2, of course." (bill 4/30/2007 1:37:05 PM) |
