"There's one precedent for the in-dash monitor/companion which comes to mind: Artoo. In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke tells R2D2 that he wants to fly for a while, and then discusses their destination. While the droid has multiple functions (in addition to comic relief), the ships are designed to have personal droids plugged into them to serve as driver/pilot support."
