Comments on Universal Translator, Babelfish Possible
The idea of a real-life universal translator is usually applied to a human language translator. But what about translating actual alien communication? (Read the complete story)

"Isn't that like saying that aliens will experience the same world we do? If its all about referencing an objectively definable world - isn't that a huge leap to make? These are the same people who argue animals have no language - yet they communicate... translate that alien first please! "
(John Smith 5/15/2008 8:45:42 AM)
"Good point; in That Immortal, Roger Zelazny points this out in some nice dialog between an Earth woman and a Vegan man.
'...What do you see?'
'A pretty white flower.'
'But it is not a pretty white flower. Not to me, anyhow. Your eyes perceive light with wavelengths between about 4000 and 7200 angstrom units. The eyes of a Vegan look deeper into the ultraviolet, down to about 3000. We are blind to what you refer to as 'red' but on this 'white' flower I see two colors for which there are no words in your language...'"

"Badly need your help. Ask a deeply religious Christian if he?d rather live next to a bearded Muslim that may or may not be plotting a terror attack, or an atheist that may or may not show him how to set up a wireless network in his house. On the scale of prejudice, atheists don?t seem so bad lately. I am from Marshall and also now am reading in English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Future stock picks, the stock stresses publicly meet by the number the year would close to want: 2020, 2030, 2050, etc." Thank you very much 8). Hasna."
