Comments on Gina Cloth-Covered Car From BMW
Watch the video to see how much this prototype car acts like a mammal with skin; I think we need to talk about exactly what sfnal properties the skin should have. (Read the complete story)

"Two things. First, I can't help but wonder how safe this is. Second, I love the headlights. Every car should have those."
(Zero 6/13/2008 8:27:48 PM)
"The safety question is a good one, but there's no reason that this fabric can't be stretched over a 'cage' structure that will keep you as safe or safer than you are now. As far as cars today are concerned, when they refer to a steel 'skin' on those cars, they're not kidding. My dad owned cars in the thirties and forties (after the war); cars today have no where near the steel in the skin and the bumpers as they did then. It's also true that many cars today have plastic parts that are painted to match the steel skin on the car. Try tapping on the panels of a 2008 four-door sedan and you'll be surprised how much plastic there is."
(Bill Christensen 6/13/2008 9:58:38 PM)
"yeah, but when you drive it does it sound like a flag flapping in the wind?"
(annaphylaxis 6/14/2008 9:30:52 AM)
"Why not "smart cloth", though? That would be something...a car that can adjust its' shape on the fly to minimize air resistance, and stiffen the fabric in certain areas upon impact."
( 6/14/2008 7:00:56 PM)
"Cool, until you open the doors. They should really have done something to keep the skin tight instead of letting it get wrinkly. The eye-like headlights almost compensate for that, though. Those are awesome."
