Comments on Kindle Orwellian Nightmare
An edition of the Times which might have been rewritten a dozen times still stood on the files bearing its original date, and no other copy existed to contradict it. (Read

"Thank you, for this insight it had not even occured to me what we could be losing from using digital books. "

"You're welcome. There has been a lot of speculation about the best way to preserve essential documents; frankly, printing a thousand copies on paper and distributing them to a thousand libraries is a pretty good method. In the digital age, work is proceeding on digital watermarks that could provide a guarantee that a document had not been changed, but I'll go with hardcopy any day."

"Preserving anything is hard. Painting was not invented 500 years ago, but the only paintings we have that are older were intentionally or unintentionally buried in sand or ash. Otherwise paint only lasts 500 years. Books had to be repeatedly copied by hand before printing. How long do printed books last?"

"Actually, of course, paintings in caves have lasted for up to 25,000 years. Paintings have been uncovered in the Middle East that are 10,000 years old. This weekend, I went to the Detroit Institute of Art with my family and saw traditional oil paintings from the twelfth century that were in amazing condition; luminous colors and almost three-dimensional quality. Printed books on acid-free paper will last for centuries; papyrus scrolls last for millennia. My point is that we have materials that are not even a generation old and cannot be read - because the systems that were used to store and read the documents no longer exist."

"Did you hear that Amazon just yanked Orwell's books from every Kindle? Almost what you were talking about, but this time they grabbed the whole books and refunded the money. Big Brother = Amazon!"

"Thanks for pointing that out; I just posted the story at Kindle Orwellian Nightmare Comes True!"
