"The idea of the 'uncanny valley', the notion that there is a point at which an increasingly realistic humanoid robot will be perceived as creepy, was suggested by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori. However, I'm betting all of his research was done in Japan, so the 'uncanny valley'' for the rest of us might well be steeper. Take a look at the Repliee R-1 robotic child which, for me, gets pretty close to the valley.
