Comments on Screamers - PKD's Claws - The Robotic Research Begins
Research on how sandfish lizards manage to both run and burrow under the sand is being touted as an aid to robotic research. I thought that Philip K. Dick's robots evolved on their own. (Read the complete story)

"I should also mention Scorponok, the sand-burrowing CGI robot from the 2007 movie Transformers.

"
(Bill Christensen 7/20/2009 7:37:41 PM)

"I am sure there were one or two scifi computer games from way back around 1995 which had underground burrowing vehicles or robots. I'm trying to remember them, but I think Command and Conquer (1995), and Dark Reign (1997) both had something like this."
(Fortigurn 7/21/2009 12:14:18 AM)
"I've also thought of the burrowing robots in the Matrix. I am also trying to remember an old scifi story or game which had burrowing robots which blew up when they were close to their target, heating up the enemy's underground base to intolerable levels."
(Fortigurn 7/21/2009 1:59:27 AM)
"Fortigurn - check out the autonomous robot earthworms from Harry Harrison's 1962 short story War With The Robots.
"...At the front end is a hard-edged orifice that drills a hole in the ground. Debris is carried back through the body of the machine and eliminated here: in operation it is not unlike the common earthworm. Directional apparatus here guides it, oriented by a gravimeter to locate our base. Here a power unit and here a frequency generator... (more)"

"Yes, I think that was it! Great pickup, thanks Bill."
(Fortigurn 7/21/2009 7:25:06 PM)
"I rember another one the atonumus mobile sword from the origenal short story that the film Screamers was based on."
