Comments on School Surveillance Via Student Laptop Webcams
Cory Doctorow alerted us to this possibility - and provides the solution. (Read the complete story)

"This goes far beyond invasion of privacy. I'm sure this goes against laws. "

"I'm pretty sure that the camera trick has been used to find lost iPhones and/or laptops before. I think that this 'feature' is an invasion of privacy even if it is used on school grounds, let alone in the homes of students."
(Bill Christensen 2/19/2010 5:31:30 AM)
"Sounds like start of a Big Brother mentality found in the Orwell's 1984. Why would a school feel its their responsibility to invade student/family home then try to punish for actions in the home? "
( 2/19/2010 5:43:09 AM)
"It's funny that now, when I see these headlines, I think: "How very Little Brother of them", and not "How very Big Brother". :)"
(Sabre Runner 2/21/2010 6:29:12 AM)
"Oddly this could be listed as 'if it's too good to be true, it probably is'. Free laptops in a grade school? It doesn't matter what the official statement is anymore. The reputation and trust of the school has been shattered. How many of these laptops are ever going to be used anymore? For that matter, how many parents will keep their children in that school?"
(Joey1058 2/21/2010 2:18:49 PM)
"The thing is, every time I hear people talking about "security", or "safety", it always involves chipping away at someone else's rights. To have a truly free society, there have to be understood risks. If you don't care about freedom, and only want safety, then move someone where else. The worst part is that none of this would be an issue if we could actually trust people to do the right thing. ("the right thing" is subjective, I know.)"
