Comments on Evolution Machine Compresses Eons Into Days
This device, which uses a technology called MAGE, dramatically increases the probability of finding useful variations on natural organisms. (Read
the complete story)
"Fiction continues to project "Mutation" as happening to an existing individual, rather than as a process affecting subsequent generations."
(Peter Jacobs 7/4/2011 11:04:46 PM) |
"^To quote Chuck of SFDebris: "Individuals don't evolve! We are not Pokemon!" As to the MAGE machine, it seems lik frightening power for huans to have, directing the development of life. Are we ready for such a responbility? How are we to ensure it isn't abused?"
(Gatomon41 7/5/2011 5:17:24 AM) |
"Gatomon41, particularly because the process is directed and seems to start by using synthesized DNA strands with a wide range of variation."
(Bill Christensen 7/5/2011 10:49:55 AM) |
"^I understand that. What I am concern about if simliar technology would be used for maleviolent means. The article is too optimistic."
(Gatomon41 7/8/2011 4:44:30 PM) |
"So correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like he is using gene sequence and manipulation to make thousands of strains of bacteria. Then he throws them into an environment of his choosing and sees which survive. I don't know if I'd call it ingenious. More of a brute force approach to directional evolution."
