Comments on Artificial Gravity Generator Now Possible?
Scientists have sneered at artificial gravity generators for the last 75 years. These ESA-sponsored experiments may have generated the first artificial gravity fields. (Read the complete story)

"This is a very important development! I believe that this could revolutionize the transportation industry(specifically space-travel)."

"If a metal disk could rotated at “relativistic speeds”, then the mass of the disk should increase upon the relativistic laws of matter, stating that a particle moving at high speeds, say those speeds that are not negligible in comparison with C, increases its mass. To avoid the problem of unbalanced axis forces, there should be two coplanar disks counter-rotating in vacuum at the same speed, and so close that looking at them from a large distance, the two disks could be considered as a single particle in space. ¿What should be the mass of this particle formed by two counter-rotating disks on approaching a relativistic speed? ¿Does the mass of a rotating disk depends on the rotating speed? The most obvious means to create gravitational fields is with mass, and a way to increase mass should be with high speed rotating disks. Magnetic and electric fields obviously interact with gravitation fields, as in the case of electromagnetic rays around a black hole or any great mass in general, so with a laser ray it should be possible to measure a gravitational field measuring the deflection angle, may be at nano degrees scale with an interferometer. How ever, due to the laws of conservation of mass, on rotating a disk at high speed, if the gravitational force gets above the weight of the disks, then they should float at an equilibrium altitude where the two gravitational fields get perfectly balanced, or generate a force against the Earth gravity that should be equivalent to the difference of the original mass of the disks and the new mass acquired on rotating at relativistic speeds. I would love to be invited to do this experiment. Please respond to this idea. I am aware that counter-rotating two iron disks in vacuum at say, 50 million revolutions per second should be extremely dangerous, because the kinetic energy would be similar to that of an atomic bomb. "Sound like they've invented a CITIES IN FLIGHT style "spindizzy", or a TALES FROM THE FLYING MOUNTAINS "gyrogravic" device."

"There is also a Danger of Kinetic energy release if something stop's it by accident or on purpose.not a good idea to be in the same location if that was to happen at all!!. think of a Gyroscope that stop's suddenly and you will get the idea. "

"counter-rotating disks is just a waste of electricity. Any "artificial" gravity generated would be directed in the equatorial plane of the spinning disks. However, powerful electromagnets mounted inside a non-conducting disk...where the magnets are tilted at a 45-degree angle with north facing away from the center of rotation, could give you a modest gravitational increase the faster you spin the centrifuge....on the "north face" of the disk, that is."

"Actually if you read a couple of books called Communion and Transformation. About people being kidnapped by aliens and they swear this is a true account. A few of the handy people developed a counter rotating electromagnetic device that did not survive it's first function check. However it did produce an unbelieveable amount of energy. If you believe the books author. I think it warrants further research, If funding were available I'd be happy to conduct it. SCI-FI to reality, Well remember LT Ohura on the original star trek. The ear piece is now avaialable from your cellphone dealer as well as the beam me up communicator. Only took about 35 years or so. Those who say it will never work are absolutely right. Those who say lets try this stumble onto incredible discoveries."

"i know this is still in testing stsges.but i think that its very likly that most people misunderstand gravity,i think gravity has a push and pull effect well you seethe core of earth acts as a pulling magnit and the sun via the atmosphere acts as a pulling magnit and both together, with a ever so perfect almost calcated force that the sun and core act as two perfect magnits and i do belive very much so that this can be replicated with this machine"

"One idea to measure the gravitational field around the counter rotating disks would be to place two high precision clock oscillators, one close to the mass center of the disks and the other close to the outer radius, I don’t mean to attach the chips to the disks, just to make them oscillate close to the disks without touching them, all this inside a vacuum chamber, and wait some weeks to accumulate enough counts to measure the time difference. One requirement of the oscillators is to have the lowest parts per million frequency tolerance to assure the measurements are consistent, and to avoid aliasing between the two clocks it would be better to have different frequencies, say the first set at 1[GHz] and the other at some irrational multiple, say 3.141516[GHz]. But the clocks should be completely self controlled, with all parts placed within the same gravitational environment, say close to the mass center or close to the outer radius, with no control ties as frequency references in the outer world. May be that relativistic speeds are not necessary, because all we need is to reach an accumulated kinetic energy equivalent to a measurable part of the original mass of the disks. "The sphere contains the liquid metal (194 Hg). The sphere does not have to spin, only the liquid within it. This would generate the necessary field - controllable induction and reversible or brought to a potential stand still. Condensers (3ea) would be enough to harness and direct all energy (nearly 100% effeciency) for other on-board functions. The vessel would ideally be an oblate spheroid. These ideas are not new...they are almost ancient - they've just been ignored for a long time a poo-pooed as flights of fancy and myth."
(mangy dog 8/8/2008 5:23:22 AM)
"I think the comment left by Mangy dog has hit on something. Not so much with metal, but liquid. The gravitational pull of the moon, is 1/6th that of earth. However, the size of the moon is approx. 1/4th that of earth. If we use mass alone in our calculation. Then the moon should be smaller, or the earth should be bigger. The mass of an object has bearing. I just believe their is more to it. liquid, from an iron core surrounded by a liquid mantle. generating an electromagnetic field, too the bodies of water increasing the gravitational field."

"The LHC in Europe is expected to produce microscopic evaporating black holes. If and when these black holes are detected may lead to the study of controlling these microscopic singularities. If we can learn to control singularities, say in magnetic or other EM fields with great percision, we might be able to harness the gravitational forces produced by these microscopic singularities. I'm not saying that we need to figure out how to perpetuate or grow a black hole - that might be very dangerous, I'm saying we might be able to use the mass and energies produced by black holes that evaporate quickly - zipping in and out of existance but leaving some gravitational residue that we can harness."

"I think people can explain gravity all they want, Most of every thing that I have seen describes the existence and nature of gravity. But I have yet to see what actually causes it. Is it due to the composition of the earth’s core, perhaps because the core is fluid, maybe because of the rotation of our planet, or is it the mass of our planet, perhaps part of all of it? What part of these known and unknown facts gives gravity the force to interact with most objects but not all? I firmly believe when the scientific community understands the conditions that cause gravity to exists, they will develop a way to create it."
(pessamist 7/16/2009 8:34:22 AM)
"Gar. So many things wrong with so many of these comments. Mass and proximity are the two factors used in determining something's gravity, period. Unless they can someday create real artificial gravity. Someone said that the moon is 1/4 Earth's size but 1/6 the gravity, and therefore mass can't be all there is to it...well the moon has an entirely different composition as Earth. "Size" and "mass" are two completely different things. The moon has roughly 1/6 the mass of Earth, it isn't about the size. Also, while we may not be able to create gravity with current technology, we can SIMULATE it with very basic technology. spinning a chamber to create centrifugal force can be used to create a downward (relative to the astronaut) force that acts much the same as gravity...in fact, that is what they are going to use for the mission to Mars. Calling it gravity is technically innaccurate, but in practice it's the same. When astronauts go to Mars, they will have Earth level "gravity" on their ship. As for the artical, that's quite interesting."

"Of course, some of these comments were also quite interesting. Just a few of them made me cringe for the lack of understanding of physics."

"Depending on the possible strength of this, it may not have the large-scale applications people are thinking of. However, it sounds like it could be used to reduce the mass needed for the "gravitational tractor" model proposed to deflect Near Earth Asteroids"

"instead; of trying to focus everything on the loss of gravity, hav a group add gravity. Inside a movable area for inhansment of our human body, strength is what im getting at. my idea is for stronger humans. i see no reason for only training using wieghts. lets use gravity. The Earth has so much gravity(known), how about for starters, start with one percent added gravity in an movable area and as we (love to say I on this subject) get stronger slowly add more."

"gravity is caused by mass period it doesn't matter what it is nothjing to do with magnetic fields thats just due to iron being in the highly compressed core of our planet cause the more mass you get the more the core is compressed"

"Give the man who mentioned the tiny black holes a prize or something because he is the closest to how it is actualy achieved electricaly. You have to magneticly bottle and accelerate plasma to certain scaled speeds for the wanted gravity effect, but it is still quite limited as it is only for people to walk and function and not loose bone calcium durring long (ten years or more) one way relativistic voyages to distant worlds. "As far as 2 "Counter Rotating Discs" There is practical applications possible (not just anti-gravity effects). If you were to use 2 very thin non conducting discs (like plastic), with ultra thin copper ribs on disc 1, ultra fine aluminum ribs on disc 2 earth, and have both discs in counter rotation. Collect an induction charge from disc 1 to huge capacitors via grounding aluminum disc 2. With a + charge on disc 1 and and a - charge (grounded side) and anti rotation on disc 2 you could make a huge capacitor of sorts. Opposite rotation effect is naturally produced by the opposite charges from + Capacitors and - ground. I am planning on trying this experiment myself. Anyone interested in experimentation can email me at roger.flemming@gmail.com"

"Sorry, I forgot to mention. The use of a (rather large) Rectifying Diode would need to be put in the circuit to act as a type of dampener to the 2 discs. Other wise the discs will keep going faster until they destroy themselves. The Rectifying Diode(s) would regulate the speed."
