Comments on Octarms - Robotic Tentacle Bot From Mars!
A robotic tentacle funded by DARPA proves adept at manipulating irregularly shaped (ie natural) objects; just like the Tripod tentacles from War of the Worlds. (Read the complete story)

"How could I forget the supervillain Doc Ock from Spiderman? He has four robotic tentacle arms. Now, what are the odds that a guy named Octavius would wind up with eight limbs?"
(Bill Christensen 5/9/2006 9:15:02 AM)
"Here is a picture of Doc Ock from the movie poster version.

"isn't it little bit strange that such technology which would have huge everyday civilian use, is developed in military program? Of course it would have military uses too, but that would be small fraction. ........................ dog's or ape's tail or elephant's nose is another comparison besides tentacle ......................... "camera on the tip" that's from H. G. Wells too, or from the movies? "

"The camera is on the tip of the Octarm. Interesting research has been done on real-life octopi; it appears that each arm has an independent peripheral nervous system and neural circuitry, to keep the arms from tangling with each other. Here's an interesting article from National Geographic - check out their conclusion:
"If you had something—a person, say—floating in a water column or in space, a straight mechanical arm is likely to push it away," said Thomas McKenna, a project officer at the ONR. "But an arm you could use to gently wrap around an object and retrieve it, that would be useful." Sounds like an Octarm!"
(Bill Christensen 5/10/2006 9:14:40 PM)
"They need a grabber at the end as well."
(Sigma 5/11/2006 2:10:26 AM)
"Thank u for giving more info about things like this you have no idea how this thing is helping me! Thankkkkssssss "

"Of course, there's an inevitable market for sex toys in this device!:D"

"I was watching Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Among the many cool CGI creations, we find robots with tentacles of steel.

"Interesting."

"Isnt it interesting that they aren't showing the public how it works?"
(Berry 7/27/2007 8:35:50 AM)
"Here's a nice video of the OctArm in action.
