Comments on Map Of World Happiness - A Global Projection of Subjective Well-Being
For the first time, a global projection of happiness is available; how happy are you? (Read
the complete story)
"iraq, afghanistan, somalia, et al: implied is no chance for a sense of well-being. it also seems that hugo chavez has made the population that he governs very comfotable with themselves."

"That's true, and very unfortunate. I'm not sure why they show no data, other than the fact that all three countries are in a state of turmoil and have no functional national government; wide sections of these countries are in a state of lawless anarchy."

"On a lighter note, I'd like to point out that the original study published by the New York Times (Why Danes are smug: comparative study of life satisfaction in the European Union) takes some very amusing pokes at the Danes:
Food—Meals - in Denmark can be politely described as unmemorable. "Danish cuisine" is an oxymoron, except perhaps the open faced "butter breads" that accompany the beer and aquavit Danes consume for lunch.
Native tongue — The Danish word "tilfreds" may have a subtly different meaning than the English "satisfied" or the Swedish "nöjd." A millennium ago the three languages were close relatives, but today they differ considerably with English evolving from the rich merger of Germanic and Latin sources, Swedish developing into an effeminate sing song, and Danish faithfully preserving the guttural grunts of the Vikings.
Alcohol and smoking — High levels of smoking and drinking are associated with low wellbeing, but Danes are among those with the highest consumption in Europe. This is reflected in causes of death and low life expectancy.4 A reviewer of our paper suggested that one reason that Danes seem smug may be that they were drunk when they participated in the Eurobarometer surveys."

"Well the Netherlands (a.k.a. that place where Amsterdam is) scored quite High too."
(Ja Thavia 1/10/2007 11:39:44 AM) |
"Happy Planet Index indeed...European countries just love to create an opportunity to indicate that the US is "unhappy." Try not to hate us just because we RULE!!"
(Yankee Doodle 1/11/2007 8:42:06 AM) |
"why the hell is tibet listed as happy? ??"
(Jabulon 1/11/2007 1:00:32 PM) |
"Umm... the US Constitution doesn't mention "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." That's in the Declaration of Independence. Sorry, buddy.
(Yikes! I can't believe I did that - thanks for writing, it's fixed.)"

"I have been to the Moddle-East and the happiest people were the Isreali ppl. All the Arabs seemed as if they were terminally constipated!"
(Kuryoos 1/12/2007 9:52:39 AM) |
"If the governments of the world set aside their differences, and put their moneys in helping their brothers and we all worked together then and only then the blind could see the lame could walk and love could prevail. But it's all put off cause they want to pretend it's religion but IT'S NOT IT'S GREED. Everyone could live in luxury at no one's expence if the money was spent on science to calabrate mans exitence and improve life we could reach other worlds and always find new and better things, if we worked together at it.The perfect utopia awaits man if we could work together. Every one has good ideas and a culmaition of them will cure all man's obsticales. Quit spending money on war and devices to kill one another and help your neighbor's and live in perfect harmony, no matter what god you believe in give science a chance don't cast your god aside cause he is real, but seen from different prospectives. If I was looking at a diamond it would look different from where I at, at the time but it's the same diamond but at a differnt view but the same diamond. give peace a chance."
(dreamwalker 1/26/2007 10:35:08 AM) |
"I was just thinking today ... imagine a world with peace, love, understanding, and respect. It's easy, if you try."
(Tony 7/3/2007 12:52:19 AM) |
"Clearly both models for measureing happiness or well being are less than comprehensive."
(Harold 7/18/2007 1:42:27 PM) |
"I agree with Dreamwalker wholeheartedly. Little confused about the map. Highest SWB is dark red according to map and yet US ranked low. Can someone explain this to me. Thanks."
