"The Horta is a great example of a friendly lifeform adapted to serve the uses of human miners.

"This article reminds me of Karel Čapek's 1936 novel 'War With The Newts', in which a species of sea salamanders is found and put to work on deep sea mining and construction projects. A brief plot summary at Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0810114682), explains how it all goes horribly wrong. "
