Comments on DARPA Seeks Self-Repairing Hunter-Killers?
Not content to have effective robotic weapon systems, DARPA wants to make sure they are 'damage tolerant.' (Read the complete story)

"I suppose you could take matters into your own hands and start building some sort of armed flying remote-controlled device of your own. Like Jim Simmons Bergen Gasser EB with Springfield 1911-A .45cal handgun.

"
(Bill Christensen 12/16/2008 9:37:38 PM)
"what will be cool is, if this technology succeeds, in time, it can and more than likely will be applied to civil platforms (ie: passenger planes).. a good example of this is the Counter MANPADS (MAN Portable Air Defense System) that was developed for commercial jets. Do a web search for JETEYE and then search for ATIRCM (Advanced Threat Infrared Countermeasure). People like to discredit the military, but their technologies do and will continue to find useful applications in civil situations.. :) "

"I forgot to mention the amazing starfish robot; it can conceptualize its own structure and 'learn' to walk even if badly damaged.

As you will see, it can also see if damage has been done. The robot once again determines the structure that it has, and constructs a new gait.

(Starfish robot learns to walk)

Watching this video is like watching fish walk on land for the first time. I was trying to figure out alternative titles like "robot parts organize themselves and walk right out of the bin." "

"I recall reading an article on here a long time ago about the robot-starfish, but I could be wrong. Keep up the great work man, I've been addicted to it for quite a while now. *thumbs up!*"
