RFID Mates With Surveillance Cameras
NEC has announced a system that combines RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) readers with surveillance cameras to provide continuous tracking of people and vehicles.
When one of the system's cameras recognizes a tagged moving object, the system then uses an RFID reader to pull information from the RFID tag carried by the moving object. The system can also use its RFID reader to track the rough position of tagged objects even when they cannot be detected by the camera.
The system could be used in any of a variety of factory environments. It could also be used in malls to track individuals passing by, checking to see what products have been purchased.
Hopefully, the metal lining used in US passports that contain RFID chips will foil the use of this sort of system. It has been demonstrated that the RFID chips in Belgian ePassports can not only be detected, but also successfully hacked.
Via NEC developed system that combines RFID and surveillance camera and Belgian electronic passports can be read without authorization
