Samsung Transparent OLED Display And H.G. Wells
Samsung's transparent OLED display was demonstrated recently at the Digital Experience 2009 conference. Take a look at a brief demonstration video of the transparent OLED display.

The Samsung Mobile Display is 4.3 inches diagonally. The transparent OLED does not require a backlight. It could be used as a heads up display in cars for GPS-directed driving. The model shown is a prototype.
The first time I remember seeing a transparent display is in H.G. Wells' extraordinary 1936 film Things to Come. As you see in the screen capture below, the technologically advanced society of the future makes use of widescreen transparent flat panel technology.
