RFID To Fight Entropy In The Home

As Erma Bombeck, doyenne of household advice, once observed "Cleaning up your house before the children are grown is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing." Fortunately, minute RFID tags attached to everything you own will be used by household robots to identify a place for everything and put everything in its place.

In a story reported in USA Today, Kevin Ashton of ThinkMagic.com, an RFID startup, thinks that someday all of those RFID devices (that can never be turned off or disabled) that globe-straddling corporations have placed on every consumer item on Earth will one day serve us parents. Here's how it works:

Your kids come in the house, and drop the following items one at a time as they race toward the tv - hats, coats, backpacks, shoes, notebooks, skateboards, pencils - you get the picture. AND THEN the miracle happens; a friendly little household robot with an RFID scanner picks up each item, identifies it, and puts it in its place. Every time.

(From Rosie)

Unfortunately, this robot will probably not be ready until the kids described above have gone to college. But look on the bright side - when they return home to take up residence once again, you've got that old problem solved. And of course, this problem was already solved by a more intelligent sci-fi robot of forty years ago - the Jetson's housekeeper Rosie the Robot.
