Chewing Robot Hailed By Would-Be Flesh-Eating Bots
A new chewing robot that actually succeeds in mimicking the action of human mandibles has finally been developed. Flesh Eating Robot enthusiasts, rejoice!
The chewing robot was created by the University of Bristol and the Department of Oral and Dental Science. The intent of the developers is to provide a fair basis for clinical trials of dental fittings like crowns and bridges. The robot is based on a three-dimensional mechanism reproducing the motion and forces sustained by teeth in a human mouth.

The movements and forces involved in natural chewing action have been replicated using the new chewing simulator -- the Chewing Robot. The robot is based on a three-dimensional mechanism with six linear actuators that reproduce the motion and forces sustained by teeth within a human mouth.
Although the picture shown above is a concept drawing, the real Chewing Robot is being demonstrated now at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition.
Biting and gnashing teeth are necessary equipment for sfnal robotics; earlier examples include the deadly city cleanup systems encountered by astronauts in Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles.
