Superior Morals For Autonomous Cars
What kind of moral standard does an autonomous car need to have? It might have to make a decision that could risk the life of its owner, rather than risk the lives of a group of pedestrians, for example.
I ran into an interesting summary article on this idea ("Autonomous Vehicles Might Develop Superior Moral Judgment"). Here are some of the approaches humanity might try in creating its moral superior:
Science fiction writers have taken a few shots at this idea. In his excellent 1953 story Assignment to Aldebaran, Kendal Foster Crossen describes a morality rating computer.
SF readers may be reminded of the Bolo autonomous tanks from Keith Laumer's stories. From simpler beginnings, the Bolos evolved to exemplars of military and civic virtue.
