In 1972, John Brunner published The Sheep Look Up, one of the great dystopian sf novels. In the story, government (as sponsored by corporations) has created a situation in which the pollution in big cities has reached such extreme levels that everyone's health is adversely affected.
Seems like China is experiencing a dystopian future of its own.
