Robot Snakes No Longer Stopped By Stairs
If you were hoping to avoid those robot snakes by going upstairs, think again.
As far as I know, the first use of the phrase "robot snake in science fiction in Bait for the Tiger by Lee Chaytor, in Fantastic Universe (1958):
"There’s Cobber. He’s a mechanical device, but he’s part of my act and easily explained. They might not think to look for a second reason for my wanting him near me...
After a long moment she dropped her hands from the wheel, took the robot snake from his box and draped his topaz and emerald length over her shoulders and the mechanism, triggered by the warmth of her body, set the jeweled evil head to weaving nervously.

They traveled with curving snakish motions with great rapidity and employed a terrific crushing power in the manner of the boa-constrictor or the giant python. Armed citizens and the police of the vicinity found them to be bullet-proof. Cartridge and buckshot alike glanced like so many dried peas off a stone wall off their convex metal sides...
