Siemens Communicator Badge: Trek-style Communicator
Siemens has introduced a new way to communicate with your home - a Star Trek-like communicator badge that can accept verbal commands and then translate them to control functions in your home.

(Siemens communicator badge)
The device can be worn like a badge, or on a lanyard around your neck. Commands from the user are transmitted via Bluetooth to a central home communications server. The server uses proprietary voice recognition software to convert your voice commands into instructions for home systems hooked up to the server.
Last year, Vocera created a similar device designed for use in hospitals; it used a wi-fi network to help individuals communicate with each other. Voice recognition was used to match names with other users.

(Vocera communications badge)
Just like Star Trek: The Next Generation's Captain Picard can use his communicator to ask questions of his ship's computer, you can ask your home to turn lights on or change the temperature in your living room.

SF author Robert Heinlein wrote about surgically implanted audio relays for the ultimate in hands-free communication. From CeBIT:2005 'Wearable Hub' for communications in the home. See also Vocera communicator.
