'Iceberg House' Of Travis Kelce Reflects Science Fiction Of Past Century
Travis Kelce decided to build down rather than up in his new house.
NFL phenom Travis Kelce is reportedly building a man cave—complete with a golf simulator—underneath his new $6 million mansion in Leawood, KS.
Taylor Swift’s better half is part of a growing trend of homeowners who are building down instead of up.
When more of a house is built below ground than above, it’s called an iceberg house—and it’s a smoking-hot trend in architecture and home design right now.
In fact, iceberg homes with blinged-out basements have been called the “newest real estate flex for wealthy homeowners” by the Robb Report.

In his 1963 classic Way Station, science fiction writer Clifford Simak described a underground rifle range that was carved out of the rock below the interstellar transfer station:
The basement was huge... carved deep into the rock that folded up to underlie the ridge...
Finally the gallery widened into an oval room and the walls here were padded with a thick gray substance that would entrap a bullet and prevent a ricochet.
Enoch walked over to a panel ... and thumbed a tumbler, then stepped quickly out into the center of the room... He stood on a little hillock and in front of him the land sloped down to a sluggish river bordered by a width of marsh.
Enoch felt the hair crawling on his scalp and he thrust the rifle out and ready. The very air of this place - wherever it might be - seemed to crawl with danger.
In this particular skeet shooting session, Enoch Wallace, the station's keeper and Civil War veteran, had his choice between the following "clay pigeons":
- Wolf-like predators, with hairless faces.
- Toad-like monstrosities, six feet long and three feet high, each with a single faceted eye
- Flying birds with rapier-like heads
- An enormous black balloon-like creature that walked taller than trees.
