Virtual Reality and Your Spider Sense
Recent work at the University of Washington has shown that combining tactile input with virtual reality can improve the usefulness of aversion therapy. Some of the subjects touched a realistic model of a large spider while grasping a virtual one, and were able to come twice as close to a real spider after completing three therapy sessions. They also reported a greater decrease in anxiety during treatment. Read more about Touch Doubles The Power Of Virtual Reality Therapy For Spider Phobia.
The description of what amounts to a virtual meeting from William Gibson's 1996 novel Idoru may not seem familiar, but just wait about twenty years. You might also see group therapy sessions like this - get your toy spider ready!
