CyberCab - Tesla Renames The Robotaxi

Readers may recall that Tesla's Elon Musk has promised that robotaxis will be ready by August (see Elon Musk Says Robotaxis Will Be Ready This August, 2024). However, Musk has just renamed the Robotaxi the Tesla CyberCab!

The new name was teased in the recent first-quarter earnings call:

"And as we've announced we'll be showcasing our purpose-built robotaxi, or Cybercab, in August," Musk said on the call.

As I've pointed out before, the first reference to a self-driving car with no steering wheel, from Paradise and Iron (1930) by Miles J. Breuer, published by Amazing Stories Quarterly in 1930. The first use of the word "robotaxi can be found in Dugal Was A Spaceman, by Joe Gibson, published by Science Fiction Quarterly in 1953.

So, you may ask, was the word "cybercab" introduced to the vocabulary of science fiction readers at some point in the past?

Yes!

(Tesla Model Y with no steering wheel)

In his 1987 story Vacuum Flowers, science fiction writer Michael Swanwick uses this clever neologism:

They turned their backs on the black water, and trudged upslope. A cybercab dogged their heels, hoping for a fare, but they ignored it, and it sped off.

Just for fun, you might enjoy comparing this graphic for the autocab from Between Planets (1951) by Robert Heinlein:
