"Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what can't be done and why. Then do it."
- Robert Heinlein

Psycho-Lease Encephalic Gadget
A device that provided the conviction that a faked scene was, in fact, real.

The ersatz window, which provided a fake view for Joe Fernwright's underground apt needed this item to make it seem real.

...of late, due to his bad financial situation he had given up trying to imagine that he lived on a great hill with a view of the sea and towering redwoods; he had become content - or rather resigned - to face blank, inert black glass. And, in addition, if that wasn't enough, he had let his psycho-lease lapse: the encephalic gadget installed in a closet of his room which, while he was "home," compelled his brain to believe that his ersatz view of Carmel was authentic.

Dick steals the basic idea for this from himself; see the entry for the swibble from his 1955 short story Service Call.
