"Science fiction is really sociological studies of the future, things that the writer believes are going to happen by putting two and two together."
- Ray Bradbury

Gas Giant
Large planet consisting primarily of gas with a solid core.

Blish is commonly credited with originating this term. The term does not appear in the original story, published in 1941, but only in the anthologized version.

A quick glance over the boards revealed that there was a magnetic field of some strength near by, one that didn't belong to the invisible gas giant revolving half a million miles away.
From Solar Plexus, by James Blish.
