A clever portmanteau word from "palimpsest" and "computer screen". A paplimpsest is a very old technology, referring to a piece of animal skin used as a page in a book, which has the ink scraped off for reuse.
Compare to mediatron from The Diamond Age (1995) by Neal Stephenson.
