"I realized there was a heavy-duty change coming in biology, and I could write a really compelling novel about catastrophic evolution, punctuated equilibrium."

Tranquilizing Gum
Chewing gum with a tranquilizing agent.

Joe Chip has had a bad day; he's just taken his dead employer to the Beloved Bretheren Moratorium to see if it's not too late for half-life.

"...calm yourself," Von Vogelsang opened the glove compartment of the chopper's control panel; he handed Joe a merry multicolored box. "Chew one of these, Mr. Chip."

"Tranquilizing gum," Joe said, accepting the box; reflexively he opened it. "Peach-flavored tranquilizing gum."
