"Science fiction has gotten more accurate as we've gotten closer to the present, because science fiction stories have not only attracted, but also generated current scientists."
- Larry Niven

Bioform House
A house grown from a bioengineered plant.

The house was a small, six-room pumpkin that had been grown on the lot that spring. Once it had reached the proper size, it had been cut from its stem, levered onto a concrete foundation, and allowed to dry. Then workers had cut holes, sprayed the shell with sealants and preservatives, and installed doors, windows, insulation, interior walls, plumbing and appliances.

There were three other pumpkin houses on the block...

A standard joke in the midwest is to refer to the 'McMansions" that are replacing farmland as "pumpkin houses" since they seem to grow about one per acre. Pumpkins require a bit more space than most of the crops you might plant.

If you liked these, you will certainly like the house trees, from Jack Vance's cool The Houses of Iszm, a 1954 novel.
