"In science fiction one can say a great many things that are unpalatable, … because it's expressed as science fiction you can slip it past their defenses."
- Frederik Pohl

Surrogate Skin
False skin that is sprayed onto damaged areas.

"Now flex the fingers of your right hand, please."

I flexed them, while she helped the doctor spray on surrogate skin. "Wear gloves for rough work," the doctor cautioned, "and come back next week..."

"Hands all right?" the Old Man asked.

"They'll do. False skin for a week..."

From The Puppet Masters, by Robert Heinlein.
Published by Doubleday in 1951
