I can't think of an earlier use for this term, about five years before Jack Williamson's classic The Cometeers.

"I’m going to give our discovery the once-over.” "Wait a minute, you nut!” Madden checked him. "Here, we’re going to take our rocket-pistols with us — no telling what’s outside.” "Come on,” said Kirk impatiently. "This is the last time I go cometeering with any one as slow as you.” |
