"Science fiction and science have always danced around each other. Science fiction is the subconscious of science."
- Greg Bear

Synthetic Sleeve
An artificial body, into which a person can be downloaded.

In the world of Altered Carbon, downloading yourself into a new body can be a jarring experience, even when it is an ordinary "natural" body. But sometimes you just can't afford "natural."

Every sleeve has a history. If that kind of thing bothers you, you line up at Syntheta's or Fabrikon. I'd worn my fair share of synthetic sleeves... Cheap, ...and they never get the flavor circuits right. Everything you eat ends up tasting like curried sawdust.
From Altered Carbon, by Richard Morgan.
