The drug is defined in the Appendix to Dune as "the second narcotic derivative (by crystal extraction) from the burned residue of elacca wood. The effect (described as timeless, sustained ecstasy) is elicited by certain atonal vibrations referred to as semuta music."

This idea strikes me as an anticipation of the rave experience, with atonal electronic dub for music, and any of an assortment of substances.
